Nom du fichier: Performance Comparison of Edge-based Equalization and Data-based Equalization for Transmitter and Receiver

To achieve high data rates over backplane channels, sophisticated equalization techniques must be used. Conventional data-based equalization techniques focus on reducing ISI at the eye center. Recently, edge-based equalization techniques, which minimize ISI at the data transitions, have been proposed as an alternative to data-based equalization. In this paper, we extend prior work by introducing edge-based partial response decision-feedback equalization. This paper compares the BER performance of edge-based equalization with conventional data-based equalization at both the TX and RX for high-speed serial link applications. Our simulations and lab data show that for a variety of backplane channels, data-based equalization gives better performance than edge-based equalization.
