The purpose of this white paper is to discuss why an ITSO smart card (Customer Media – CM) does not always provide the space for the number of ITSO products1 you might expect. It describes how the card configuration is every bit as important as the amount of memory available. It also discusses how the latest implementations of certain CM types have evolved and how they may be more appropriate to commercial schemes and/or those where more and/ or larger products are required.
Part of the reason for this is the organization of the file system for the different Customer Media Definition (CMD) types as defined in the ITSO specifications. The good news is that the same specification provides a way to overcome the problem.
The not-so-good news is that there are other practical considerations that dictate we need to adopt a pragmatic approach to ensure an interoperable environment is maintained.
One notable example is the fact that switching from a MIFARE DESFire 4k card to a MIFARE DESFire 8k card may not provide the anticipated increased capacity for tickets (or ITSO Product Entities – IPE); or at least not without card profile optimisation followed by significant pre-release validation to ensure configuration compatibility with all possible terminals that the card may encounter.
This paper will discuss other options that provide 3 to 4 times the ticket capacity of a DESFire 8k smart card with no performance or cost penalty.
