Cost-sensitive and high-performance chipset products to benefit from high-volume, silicon-proven PHY cells
Los Altos, California, United States – 10/26/2005
Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq:RMBS), one of the world’s premier technology licensing companies specializing in high-speed chip interfaces and Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. (SiS) (TSE2363), a worldwide leader in the development, manufacturing and marketing of leading-edge logic products, today announced that SiS has licensed Rambus’ PCI Express* PHY cells for use in its PC core logic products. SiS core logic chipsets address the high-volume PC market, featuring the latest technology for Intel and AMD processor-based PCs.
The license agreement covers Rambus PCI Express PHY technology for implementation in multiple process geometries for the SiS product line of PC chipsets. Optimized for link utilization, latency, power consumption and silicon footprint, the Rambus PHY cells address SiS’ southbridge and northbridge products.
SiS combines professional chip design with advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies, offering its customers a broad range of PC, notebook, Wireless LAN and Information Appliances products that incorporate leading-edge logic products.
“With this license agreement, SiS and Rambus continue their long standing collaboration of bringing the most advanced high-speed interfaces to leading edge chipset products,” said Daniel Chen, CEO of SiS. “By incorporating Rambus’ proven, high quality PHY IP in our products, we can address the time-to-market needs of our system customers and continue to offer the latest technology advancements in our line of products.”
Rambus’ PCI Express PHY cells are complete serial communication cells optimized for implementing the physical layer of the PCI Express standard. The silicon-proven serial interfaces feature point-to-point, full duplex signaling and specialized testability features. Rambus has also demonstrated its Turbo PCI Express platform with serial links operating at 5.0Gbps and 6.25Gbps data rates to meet future PCI Express requirements. Rambus’ PCI Express PHY cells are incorporated in numerous products listed on the PCI-SIG Integrators List, having passed PCI-SIG compliance and interoperability testing by Rambus PHY cell customers and digital controller partners. The PCI-SIG is the special interest group that owns and manages PCI specifications as open industry standards.
“As one of the three largest computer chipset manufacturers in the world, SiS has the capability to bring the broadest range of core logic chipset products to a wide range of computer users,” said Laura Stark, vice president of the Platform Solutions Group at Rambus. “These users can now benefit from the most widely compliant and interoperability-tested high-performance PCI Express PHY cells available today.”
The Rambus PCI Express PHY design is available on multiple foundry and captive processes at process nodes ranging from 180nm to 65nm. The PHY cells are in production in high-volume applications such as PC graphics, chipsets, switch and bridge chips. The complete Rambus solution consists of the Rambus PCI Express PHY cells and the Rambus PCI Express digital controller. Rambus PCI Express digital controllers are highly configurable cores, available in end point, root complex, switch port, and hybrid (root complex and end point) configurations. The architecture is tailored to optimize link utilization, latency, power consumption and silicon footprint.
