Presentation:

Session Title: Mobile Memory Solutions for Smartphones and Tablets
12:30 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. AST
Ajay Jain, director of product marketing, Mobile Products, Rambus

Midrange smartphones and tablets are projected to be the fastest-growing segment in mobile computing. Lower device cost may drive this growth, but consumers are unwilling to compromise on performance, capacity, or battery life. This presentation will describe a memory solution that uses enhanced signaling techniques to reduce memory subsystem power up to 25% versus standard LPDDR3 while retaining backward compatibility. By implementing enhanced signaling techniques similar to LPDDR4, SoC developers can achieve increased performance at improved power efficiency with the cost advantages of LPDDR3.

Rambus Unveils Binary Pixel Technology that Dramatically Improves Photo Quality in Mobile Devices

Breakthrough technology Provides Single-Shot High Dynamic Range and Improved Low-Light Sensitivity in a Single Exposure

SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES and BARCELONA, SPAIN – 02/25/2013 – Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS), the innovative technology solutions company that brings invention to market, today unveiled breakthrough binary pixel technology that dramatically improves the quality of photos taken from mobile devices. The Rambus binary pixel technology includes image sensor and image processing architectures with single-shot high dynamic range (HDR) and improved low-light sensitivity for better videos and photos in any lighting condition.

“Today’s compact mainstream sensors are only able to capture a fraction of what the human eye can see,” said Dr. Martin Scott, chief technology officer at Rambus. “Our breakthrough binary pixel technology enables a tremendous performance improvement for compact imagers capable of ultra high-quality photos and videos from mobile devices.”

As improvements are made in resolution and responsiveness, more and more consumers are using the camera functionality on their smart phone as the primary method for taking photos and capturing memories. However, high contrast scenes typical in daily life, such as bright landscapes, sunset portraits, and scenes with both sunlight and shadow, are difficult to capture with today’s compact mobile sensors – the range of bright and dark details in these scenes simply exceeds the limited dynamic range of mainstream CMOS imagers.

This binary pixel technology is optimized at the pixel level to sense light similar to the human eye while maintaining comparable form factor, cost and power of today’s mobile and consumer imagers. The results are professional-quality images and videos from mobile devices that capture the full gamut of details in dark and bright intensities.

Benefits of binary pixel technology:

  • Improved image quality optimized at the pixel level
  • Single-shot HDR photo and video capture operates at high-speed frame-rates
  • Improved signal-to-noise performance in low-light conditions
  • Extended dynamic range through variable temporal and spatial oversampling
  • Silicon-proven technology for mobile form factors
  • Easily integratable into existing SoC architectures
  • Compatible with current CMOS image sensor process technology

The Rambus binary pixel has been demonstrated in a proof-of-concept test-chip and the technology is currently available for integration into future mobile and consumer image sensors. For additional information visit www.rambus.com/binarypixel.

Rambus Unveils Imerz, an End-to-End Interactive Multi-Media Platform

Multi-screen viewing, heterogeneous device shifting, social interaction, e-commerce and access to metadata – all at the same time

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, UNITED STATES – 01/07/2013 – Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS), the innovative technology solutions company that brings invention to market, today unveiled a new multi-media solution that allows consumers to interact with and access “over the top” video in a personalized, immersive experience.

Rambus, which has traditionally been known for its memory architecture solutions, will publicly demonstrate its software-based, multi-media solution this week in Las Vegas, NV.

The Rambus Imerz™ universal platform uniquely allows for integrated multi-screen viewing, social interaction, e-commerce and access to metadata in a simple and compelling way.

“The level of access and interactivity we’ve been able to incorporate into our Imerz platform is unprecedented for the consumer. While other offerings have delivered aspects of interactive TV, we feel none of them have successfully integrated all of the functionality into a single, integrated offering like we have,” said John Thomas, vice president of the Mobile Technology Division at Rambus.

Key components of the new platform include:

  • Single point of integration for Content Rights Owners
  • Unique searching interface to discover and select video content
  • Seamless connection between TV and mobile, including mobile-based media remote control
  • Deep social integration so that consumers can sign-on with their social networks and share, post, discuss what they’re viewing from their mobile device and TV
  • On-screen interactivity with video and broadcast content, including frame-by-frame synchronization of temporal/spatial tags for story-telling, product information and e-commerce
  • Unparalleled communication opportunities for consumers to use in-app IM, voice chat, video chat and on-TV social viewing
  • Content tagging service, including curated or live metadata logging

The Imerz media platform allows content rights owners and distributors to integrate against a single point in the cloud to distribute their content over multiple heterogeneous devices and take advantage of the full interactivity. For example, Willow.TV, a rights owner for cricket content in North America, has deployed the Imerz platform. In addition, the Willow.TV application for GoogleTV is also based on the Imerz platform and is available for download through the Google Playstore. Rambus is working with additional content rights owners, along with distributors, to incorporate additional content and new end-points.

Cryptography Research Signs License with Major Smartphone Manufacturer

Agreement covers Differential Power Analysis countermeasures

SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES – 09/30/2011 – Cryptography Research, Inc. (CRI), a division of Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ:RMBS), today announced it has signed a license agreement with a major smartphone and tablet manufacturer for the use of CRI’s Differential Power Analysis (DPA) countermeasures patents. Under the agreement, ongoing royalties will be paid for the use of CRI’s patented innovations. Specific terms of the agreement and disclosure of the manufacturer are confidential.

“Consumers increasingly rely on their smartphones and tablets to perform financial transactions, store personal data and access premium content,” said Paul Kocher, president and chief scientist of Cryptography Research. “Our DPA countermeasures technology is a key part of securing mobile devices to safeguard the data of consumers and content providers worldwide.”

Differential Power Analysis (DPA) is a form of attack that involves monitoring variations in electrical power consumption of a target device and then uses advanced statistical methods to derive cryptographic keys or other secrets. Strong countermeasures to DPA are important for securing mobile devices, bank cards, pay television systems, secure identity products, secure storage media, and other electronic systems and components. Many of the world’s leading security standards include requirements that devices be protected against DPA and related attacks.

Cryptography Research has developed a portfolio of more than 55 patents covering countermeasures to DPA attacks, with additional patent applications pending worldwide.
