SiFive eyes silicon reset with RISC-V
A San Francisco-based startup known as SiFive has announced plans to develop and sell chips based on open-source RISC-V architecture. According to Don Clark of the Wall Street Journal, the tech includes a set of instructions that define the functions of a microprocessor, which can serve as a starting point for designing a chip.
This algorithm steals ATM PINs from wearables
Security researchers at Binghamton University and the Stevens Institute of Technology have successfully combined smartwatch sensor data with an algorithm to crack ATM PINs. As Megan Scudellari of IEE Spectrum reports, Chen Wang of Binghamton University and Yingying Chen at the Stevens Institute of Technology conducted 5,000 key-entry tests on three different keypads: a detachable ATM pad, a keypad on ATM machine and a QWERTY keyboard.
Downloading 4K UHD content with FandangoNow and VIDITY
James K. Willcox of Consumer Reports recently observed that a number of companies, such as Amazon and Netflix, have been “moving quickly” to bolster their respective rosters of 4K movies and TV shows. “Many of these programs also support high dynamic range, or HDR, a technology that allows for more contrast between bright and dark areas of the picture,” he explained. “[This] brings greater realism, detail, and vibrancy to many scenes.” According to Willcox, FandangoNow, formerly known as M-Go, already has hundreds of 4K videos, including some that support the HDR10 format.
Why megapixels are only part of the smartphone camera equation
Carolyn Mathas of Electronics 360 recently penned a blog post exploring the ever-higher resolutions supported by smartphone cameras. “What [really] drives the need for ever-higher smartphone camera pixel count today—bragging rights or stunning selfies?” she asks. “And when will the number of megapixels be enough?” As Mathas notes, image resolution equates to image detail. “If high resolution means more image detail, does it just mean how well you can see that hummingbird extracting nectar from the stunning flower? No, it also has to do with how large you can print, how much you are able to crop, how far you can blow up an image and more,” she continues. “So an easy answer to the question, ‘Do we really need pixel counts in the mid-teens?’ can be answered with ‘Do you do these things, or are you just interested in seeing the hummingbird?’”
Algorithms for the enterprise
A Gartner analyst has recommended that IT leaders begin designing their algorithmic business models – both to capitalize on their potential for business differentiation and to mitigate the possible risks involved. “The significant development and growth of smart machines is a major factor in the way algorithms have emerged from the shadows, and become more easily accessible to every organization,” Steve Prentice, VP and Gartner fellow, told attendees at the Gartner Enterprise Architecture Summit 2016.
