Writing for Semiconductor Engineering, Ann Steffora Mutschler observes that under the hood, modern vehicles barely resemble their predecessors from a few decades ago.
“There are sophisticated safety and drivetrain monitoring features, software for interpreting and interacting with the outside world and modifying the inside environment, and a host of features that might have seemed impossible or even ridiculous in the past,” she explained. “And there’s much more to come.”
USA’s wildly popular “Mr. Robot” took center stage at the CES 2016 CyberSecurity Forum in Las Vegas. Hosted by Nilay Patel of The Verge, the Robot panel featured a number of writers, consultants and security experts, including USA Network’s Kor Adana.
Adana – a scribe for the hit series – told conference attendees that he and Robot creator Sam Esmail were both frustrated with the way the majority of conventional films and shows insisted on portraying hacking over the years.
Earlier this week, Team Lightbulb hosted its annual Broadband Conference at CES 2016. A number of topics were discussed at various panels throughout the day, including the steady evolution of intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
Jill Ingrassia, the Managing Director of Government Relations and Traffic Safety Advocacy at AAA, told conference attendees the auto industry has managed to significantly reduce the amount of vehicle crashes in recent years. However, more progress must be made, as thousands of people a year still lose their lives in traffic accidents.
Ernest Worthman of Semiconductor Engineering recently described White Box Cryptography (WBC) as a “novel approach” that implements cryptography algorithms in software, rather than hardware.
“The idea is to keep the cryptographic assets secure against attacks, using code obfuscation,” he explained. “Essentially, a white box implementation is taking a key and creating, in software, a key-instantiated version where the key is hidden in the code.”
Writing for Semiconductor Engineering, Ernest Worthman notes that the Cloud-centric concept of Anything-as-a-Service (XaaS) hopes to simplify everything from cutting-edge business to consumer applications.
“On the consumer side, it promises to take everything from your recipe book to your daily programs and the slew of applications and move them to the Cloud,” Worthman explained.

“Modern vehicles are essentially a network of networks – equipped with a range of embedded communication methods and capabilities,” said Joe Gullo, the senior director for Rambus Ecosystem strategy and development. “As such, there is broad consensus that vehicle cyber security should rank as a top priority for the automotive industry.”
