Let’s talk about VIDITY and 4K UHD

Home Media Magazine staff recently sat down with David Huerta, GM of the Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA), to talk aboutVIDITY. Essentially, VIDITY allows consumers to download, store and play 4K Ultra HD movies with high dynamic range (HDR) across a plethora of devices.

“With VIDITY, a single content purchase gives the consumer comprehensive ownership — not just a license, but ownership — of whatever title they’ve selected. With that purchase, they download 4K UHD with HDR and HD and/or SD files of the film, along with additional copyrights,” Huerta told the publication.

“With VIDITY, a single content purchase gives the consumer comprehensive ownership — not just a license, but ownership — of whatever title they’ve selected. With that purchase, they download 4K UHD with HDR and HD and/or SD files of the film, along with additional copyrights,” Huerta told the publication.

“The files can then be stored on any VIDITY-enabled device — such as hard drives, [smart]phones, set-top boxes, and so on. They can also be moved or copied, either wirelessly or via SD card, to other VIDITY enabled devices for local playback.”

According to Huerta, consumers have grown to expect such functionality with content, and there’s no reason they can’t, or shouldn’t, have it in a 4K UHD environment.

“We see VIDITY as central to a healthy and vibrant 4K UHD with HDR ecosystem. Consumers demand their content whenever and wherever they want it, and are increasingly looking for a ‘buy once, play anywhere’ solution,” he explained. “VIDITY’s quality enables it to stand alone as a living room only technology, but goes well beyond that by serving as a bridge between in-home and mobile playback. We think this will be critical to helping drive the 4K UHD ecosystem and enticing consumers to increase their content purchases.”

One of the great things about DVD and Blu-ray says Huerta, is that you can put any disc in any player and it will play.

“Think of VIDITY in that same vein. You put VIDITY content in any VIDITY player — which can be built into a set-top box, smartphone, tablet, computer, game console, smartTV — and it plays,” he added.

As Huerta confirms, there are already nearly 40 titles [that supports the VIDITY format] available for download via MGo/FandangoNOW.

“We expect new content to be continually released in the VIDITY format. We are in contact with studios and content distributors, as well as device manufacturers, to expand VIDITY offerings. VIDITY is currently the only solution that offers consumers the ability to download and own recently released premium movies,” he concluded.

Willcox of Consumer Reports recently observed that a number of companies, such as Amazon and Netflix, have been “moving quickly” to bolster their respective rosters of 4K movies and TV shows. “Many of these programs also support high dynamic range, or HDR, a technology that allows for more contrast between bright and dark areas of the picture,” he explained. “[This] brings greater realism, detail, and vibrancy to many scenes.” According to Willcox, FandangoNow, formerly known as M-Go, already has hundreds of 4K videos, including some that support the HDR10 format.

According to Willcox, FandangoNow, formerly known as M-Go, already has hundreds of 4K videos, including some that support the HDR10 format.

“Titles, not exclusive to this service, include ‘The Martian,’ ‘The Revenant,’ and ‘Life of Pi,”’ he said. “The company charges $1 or $2 extra to rent 4K titles, and $5 or so more for purchases. [FandangoNow also] supports VIDITY, a new 4K and HDR download service.”

It should be noted that Samsung recently rolled out a new lineup of HDR LED TVs (KU6300 and KU6500), which boasts full support for VIDITY. Perhaps not surprisingly, the VIDITY-enabled TVs hit the market just months after Thomas K. Arnold, the publisher & editorial director of Home Media Magazine, declared the platform to be “on a roll.”

“[VIDITY] bridges the complexities of interoperability and compatibility across devices,” he wrote. “It’s a standardized solution that takes advantage of technological advances in chipsets, operating systems and devices — from smartphones to tablets to computers to smart TVs — to enable the best possible digital entertainment experience without getting in the way of the experience and requiring the consumer to have a Ph.D. just to figure out how to make it work.”

With no requirement to log into accounts or connect to the Internet for playback, VIDITY compliant products offer consumers a convenient way to store, copy and share their digital files. These specifications, which support VIDITY™-branded consumer devices, are endorsed by a number of major Hollywood studios, including 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros., to enable the secure download, local storage and playback of premium HD content.

“It is critical to provide consumers with the best digital programming ownership experience in a safe and secure manner,” said Dr. Simon Blake-Wilson, VP of Products and Marketing at Rambus Cryptography Research. “Rambus is pleased to work with INSIDE Secure to support new premium content protection standards like VIDITY, enabling consumers to enjoy the best content in their favorite setting on their favorite device.”

As we’ve previously discussed on Rambus Press, the buzz around 4K UHD content has continued unabated since taking center stage CES 2016. Nevertheless, as Doug Lowther of TelecomAsia points out, 4K UHD requires thoughtful market analysis before big steps are taken to bring it to customers. More specifically, there is one key element that must underpin all 4K UHD strategies – securing content against unauthorized access.

“This is a concept that the industry is beginning to subscribe to, with VIDITY recently rolling out new security protocols to protect its business model and Twentieth Century Fox stating ‘a proactive security strategy is vital to releasing the highest quality HD and Ultra HD content to the consumer,’” he explained.
