Myth #1: Rambus Ecebs only sell their own ITSO CMD2 cards
WRONG! Did you know that we supplied over 1 Million DESFire smart cards last year to local authorities and transport operators? We supply appropriate technology to our clients – if DESFire is what they want and need, then we can fulfil that. However, did you know that Rambus Ecebs CMD2 (Customer Media Definition 2) cards offer greater application space for ITSO Ticketing Products? In fact, ITSO CMD2 cards provide more space for ITSO ticketing products than any other CMD type. For this reason we have opted to certify ITSO CMD2 contactless and dual interface cards.
Myth #2: Rambus Ecebs cards do not support legacy applications
WRONG! Our CMD2 smart cards also come with MIFARE emulation so that legacy MIFARE 1k and 4k applications can be supported on the same card as the ITSO CMD2 application. This makes the transport smart card even better value.
Myth #3: Rambus Ecebs ITSO smart cards are slow
WRONG! We supply DESFire cards that are just as capable as anyone else’s DESFire cards. We also supply CMD2 cards – both as Java Card applets and as our own native card. We welcome any benchmark, but we believe our latest generation ITSO smart cards offer class leading performance – and suffer no relevant penalty when compared with DESFire.
Myth #4: Rambus Ecebs ITSO cards are expensive
WRONG! We are the card supplier to the Centro framework to supply ITSO smart cards (including DESFire and CMD2) and won that tender on merit – including price!
Our experience allows us to guide our clients to the product that will best suit their needs, both now and in the future. We have been working hard over the last few months to get greater value for our CMD2 offering and we are happy to discuss our latest revised pricing with interested parties.
Myth #5: Rambus Ecebs ITSO cards are proprietary.
WRONG! Our CMD2 cards behave exactly the same as any other ITSO CMD2 card as defined in the ITSO specifications. However, the ITSO standard does not provide a “standard” way to issue a card. Rambus Ecebs approach is based on open standards used in the smart card industry, with optional levels of security depending on the environment in which the card is being personalised and issued. There is no restriction imposed by the operating system on how it can be used. In fact, the opposite is true. Rambus Ecebs Multefile™ system allows additional applications to be enabled and added even when the card is in the user’s hands – removing the need to send him or her multiple cards for multiple applications. A key point here is that there is no compulsion to use this mechanism, if it is not required.
