MStar to Include Cryptography Research’s CryptoFirewall Security Core in Connected TV Chips

Enables first IP core-based, advanced security for smart TV market; fully compatible with existing CAS and DRM, providing most stringent security for premium content

San Francisco, Calif. and Hsinchu, Taiwan — August 28, 2014 —Cryptography Research, the security division of Rambus (NASDAQ:RMBS), today announced that MStar Semiconductor, Inc., a leading semiconductor company for display and digital home solutions, has licensed the Cryptography Research CryptoFirewall™ security core for integration into its connected TV solution chips. The CryptoFirewall core will provide operators and over-the-top (OTT) distributors utilizing MStar-based connected TVs with strong hardware security to protect content and services against piracy.

The proliferation of OTT content, along with the market opportunity for “smart” connected televisions, has created a need for security solutions that not only offer robust protection on par with set-top-boxes, but also work across broad ecosystems. Through adding in the CryptoFirewall core, MStar is taking a differentiated approach by integrating a provider-agnostic security block that resides within the SoC, available for all service providers. Operators and OTT distributors can benefit from hardware-based security that satisfies the most stringent requirements for premium content, all while continuing to use their existing CAS and DRM systems.

“Increasingly, consumers want the convenience of viewing all their preferred content from their connected TV. To enable this flexibility, connected TVs must work with multiple operators and OTT distributors using different CAS and DRM systems. The CryptoFirewall security core supports this complex requirement in a unique and innovative way,” said Wayne Tsai, Marketing Director, MStar. “The CryptoFirewall security core delivers both strong hardware security and multi-operator flexibility in our next-generation chips and seamlessly integrates with MStar’s TEE environment.”

“With its proven history of delivering end-to-end semiconductor solutions for TV and impressive market share, MStar will be able to revolutionize security in the connected TV market,” said Paul Kocher, president and chief scientist of the Rambus Cryptography Research division. “The CryptoFirewall IP core solution helps connected TVs achieve a similar level of content protection as set-top boxes, while limiting the service providers’ internal engineering and integration costs. These advancements in connected TV security are critical to realizing the full potential of OTT content; securely and seamlessly enabling consumers to receive content from a wide range of sources directly on their TVs.”

The CryptoFirewall core is a self-contained ASIC security core that provides a secure hardware foundation for signal security applications. The CryptoFirewall cores enable a uniformly high level of security across set-top-boxes and connected TVs, enabling the next wave of secure digital distribution. The core is designed to protect cryptographic keys and computations within a chip, even if surrounding components are compromised. The CryptoFirewall core is easily integrated directly into video decoding SoCs from the leading manufacturers supplying the set-top box chip market and now, with MStar, the leading TV silicon provider. The CryptoFirewall core provides a robust and cost-effective solution that is complementary with hardware and software-based conditional access solutions, protecting against piracy of content and services.

Cryptography Research and Entropic Sign License Agreement for DPA Countermeasures to Secure Next Generation Content

Security technology fully protects set-top box SoCs from non-invasive side channel attacks

SAN FRANCISCO and SAN DIEGO – July 23, 2014 – Cryptography Research, the security division of Rambus (NASDAQ:RMBS), and Entropic(NASDAQ:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, today announced they have signed a patent license agreement allowing for the use of the Cryptography Research side-channel attack countermeasures in Entropic’s integrated circuits. The Cryptography Research patented technology will protect Entropic’s set-top box system-on-a-chip (SoC) products against differential power analysis (DPA) and related attacks. This agreement builds on the previous agreement between the two companies with Entropic already licensing the Cryptography Research CryptoFirewall™ tamper-resistant core for set-top boxes.

“While high value content enhances the Pay-TV experience, it also carries with it substantial risk for our OEM and Service Provider customers,” said Matt Rhodes, senior vice president, Global Marketing, Entropic. “Today’s premium programming requires strong protection systems and CRI’s DPA countermeasure technology provides an essential foundation for any Conditional Access or Digital Rights Management system.”

“The market demands for protection against non-invasive side channel attacks such as DPA have grown with the continued rise of high quality content,” said Paul Kocher, chief scientist of the Rambus Cryptography Research division. “Entropic has been a terrific partner for our CryptoFirewall technology and is once again taking a leadership role in deploying strong content protection technology in the set-top box SoC market.”

Using DPA, attackers can measure the power consumption of a set-top box chip to extract secret cryptographic keys stored within the set-top box. The discovery of secret keys undermines the security of set-top boxes within a service provider’s network and can result in the theft of valuable, high-quality content and services as well as leaving other data like personal information vulnerable. Set-top box SoCs that contain DPA countermeasures prevent the power consumption analysis through a series of techniques to ultimately protect the secret keys of a set-top box from being discovered.

Side channel and DPA attacks are non-invasive attacks that involve monitoring the fluctuating electrical power consumption of a target device and then using advanced statistical methods to derive cryptographic keys and other secrets. Strong countermeasures to these attacks help protect tamper-resistant products used in applications such as banking, pay television, mass transit, secure ID, and wireless telecommunications.

Rambus Cryptography Research Division Unveils CryptoManager Secure Feature Management Platform

Intends to help improve power and performance in cloud and server-based memory environments

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – June 11, 2014 – Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ:RMBS) today announced the CryptoManager platform, a feature management solution developed by the Rambus Cryptography Research (CRI) division. The CryptoManager platform consists of both a Security Engine and an Infrastructure suite that can dramatically improve efficiency and security during the manufacturing process. As lead customer, Qualcomm (see related release also issued today) is integrating the CryptoManager Security Engine into select SoCs and adopting the Infrastructure suite as part of its overall manufacturing process.

The CryptoManager Security Engine is a silicon core integrated into a SoC, providing a hardware root-of-trust for the secure provisioning, configuration, keying, and authentication of SoCs during chip and device manufacturing. The CryptoManager Infrastructure includes hardware appliances for securing in-factory operations and management systems for protecting the distribution of authorization and cryptographic keys throughout the chip manufacturing processes. In addition to helping address security needs for advanced mobile devices, the overall solution enables additional efficiencies, including dynamic provisioning for cost effective device personalization.

“SoC manufacturing is increasingly complicated and expensive. The ongoing demand for improved time-to-market and lack of visibility during the complicated manufacturing process restricts the ability to quickly respond to dynamic market conditions for new features,” said Paul Kocher, president and chief scientist for the Rambus Cryptography Research division. “The CryptoManager platform can dramatically change the chip manufacturing process by helping chip and handset makers tackle the security challenges of future mobile devices, allowing for a secure foundation for our connected lives.”

The CryptoManager platform was specifically designed to be easily integrated into any manufacturing facility. As part of the platform, the CryptoManager Security Engine addresses fundamental security needs such as the on-chip processes involved with the provisioning and management of cryptographic keys, debug modes, and chip capabilities. The CryptoManager Infrastructure provides a single UI across factory locations, real-time visibility into operations, and remote feature activation. As a result, chip and handset makers can meet device personalization demands, reduce operating costs and accelerate time-to-market – all while ensuring the security of secret keys and sensitive data.
