A recent article featured in LEDs Magazine describes how Fern Howard’s EdgeLED™ luminaire range is helping to drive company growth.
Indeed, LED technology has long promised energy saving advantages – although its wholesale adoption in commercial applications such as offices and shared areas has been somewhat restricted by the visual discomfort created by intense light sources.
“Previous attempts to reduce this intensity had always involved diffusing or masking the light in some way – so compromising optical efficiency and negating the energy benefits LED brings,” LEDs Magazine staff explained.
“[However], Fern-Howard’s EdgeLED technology places LEDs around an injection-molded light guide that contains thousands of micro lenses. These distribute the light uniformly, reducing glare and allowing the full energy saving potential of LED lighting to be realized.”
Unsurprisingly, the efficiency of EdgeLED luminaires and other Fern Howard products recently caught the attention of the British government, which approved a major grant expected to help the company grow 25-35% over the next three years.
It should be noted that Fern Howard’s EdgeLED lineup is powered by Rambus’ MicroLens® Optics technology.
“MicroLens optics feature three-dimensional elements embedded in an optical waveguide or film. This configuration facilitates customized control of uniformity and output ray angle distribution for optimized application efficiency,” Kendra De Berti, a director at Rambus, explained.
“Through the use of proprietary optical modeling software and design techniques, the MicroLens features and its pattern can be tailored to efficiently spread the light across an entire lighting surface or direct it in specific locations.”
Simply put, says De Berti, the increased efficiency and control offered by MicroLens optics minimizes the number of fixtures and lamps required to deliver the desired amount of light – thereby significantly lowering energy consumption and cost.
