Over the past week I have been working in all departments and with many interesting and colourful people at Rambus Ecebs. Although, I have only done a few basic jobs here at Rambus Ecebs I still feel like this could help me with the task of choosing my future career, whether this be with Rambus Ecebs or a different company. I will use the skills I have learnt here the past week both at school and in my future employment. Over the past week I have been involved with lots of different departments.
At the start of the week I was working with Roy McCallan, who is the company’s Quality Manager. To begin the day Mr McCallan gave me an introduction to Rambus Ecebs, as well as the run down on health and safety. Mr McCallan introduced me to the first aiders and fire marshals, during the introduction Mr McCallan gave me the background of the company. After the talk Mr McCallan showed me the sequence of operations for smart card design or the design of any item in general.
I then went to work with the Admin team which consisted of Anne Julia Crawford and Marion Lightbody. Before I started my work experience Mrs Crawford gave me a quick introduction to what was involved in the administration of a company such as Rambus Ecebs. After the introduction I was given some work to do using the finance system. The work I was given involved expenses, finance, invoices and both incoming and outgoing mail. I also helped book a London to Glasgow return flight and hotel booking.
I spent some time with Daniel Abson in IT support, to start the day I took an old computer apart to salvage parts that could be used to fix broken computers. I also experienced what it would be like to fix everyday IT problems. The second half of the day I spent with Anthony Jannetta, in Customer support, Mr Jannetta showed me how the City if York smart card was produced; I witnessed the entire process of card production. I then viewed a Card Management System (CMS) and analysed smart card content.
I gained experience in the Development department of Rambus Ecebs with David Jenkins, where I helped build a model transformer for mobile smart card usage. I thought the process of which, involving cards and wires, will help me with my physics course when I return to school. I was then shown how a smart card system works on a ferry and how it keeps a record of every ticket sale and the number of passengers on a ferry.
I spent some time with Tony Breslin, also in development, where he showed me how smart card software was written on a computer. I also worked with Kyle Bremner who showed me what he was doing to achieve his university degree.
Finally as part of my experience in the marketing department I was asked to write this blog post to summarise my weeks work experience at Rambus Ecebs.
I feel that the Company’s development in smart cards and mobile applications are the way forward in transport. I feel that in the next few years the smart card software developed here will be used on every smart card in the world.
I found Rambus Ecebs employees to be very friendly and helpful and if I had a problem I am sure any of them will help me. Everyone gets on well and there is good communication between everybody.
