Rambus Makes Real-time Payments Safer with Payment Account Tokenization

Secures account-to-account transactions by removing sensitive information from the transaction process

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – May 9, 2018 – Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS) today announced the launch of its Payment Account Tokenization solution to secure account-based transactions, such as automated clearing house (ACH) and real-time payments. The solution will enable central banks and clearing houses to replace sensitive account numbers with unique tokens and reduce the impact of fraud for transactions including direct credit, direct debit and person-to-person (P2P) payments.

Reduce account fraud through tokenization
Payment Account Tokenization secures account-based payments by replacing the valuable account credentials with a cryptographic token. This process significantly reduces the risk and impact of account-based fraud as the foundation of a safe and secure instant payments framework. When implemented by a centralized body, like a central bank, Payment Account Tokenization reduces fraud and enables key use cases like P2P, direct credit, and push payments in real-time.

“Tokenization has already been proven successful in securing mobile payments worldwide.  Our Payment Account Tokenization does the same for real-time payments, enabling account-based transactions to be processed faster and safer than ever before,” said Bret Sewell, SVP and general manager of the Rambus Security Division.

451 Research principal analyst, Jordan McKee notes, “Digital has paved the way for fast and easy payment experiences, prompting a rise in account-based transactions. Fraudsters have made note of this trend and are increasing their focus on account credentials given their growing disbursement across many locations, including e-commerce websites, mobile and P2P wallets, invoices and payroll. To protect customers and thwart fraudulent attacks, businesses must implement security tactics that serve to eliminate the use of sensitive credentials in the transaction flow.”

Managing account data, faster and safer
The introduction of real-time payments increases risk for financial institutions, as they now have seconds instead of days to identify fraudulent transactions. By removing account numbers from the transaction process completely, tokenization can significantly reduce the risk and impact of account-based fraud and create secure real-time payments frameworks.

Key features of Rambus Payment Account Tokenization
The Payment Account Tokenization solution consists of a number of primary features, including:

  • Account-based tokenization eliminates the need to store and transmit sensitive account information, alleviating the risk of stolen credentials being used to commit transactional fraud. The system integrates with existing infrastructure and tokens route normally through the payment network.
  • Life cycle management enables banks to link, suspend, (re)activate or unlink tokenized bank account numbers.
  • Domain controls limit token usage to a specific channel, merchant or spending limit by applying a set of parameters. Any use of the intercepted token outside of its set parameters would immediately flag as fraudulent and render the token useless.
  • Cryptogram protection generates application cryptograms prior to a payment and validates them during a transaction. A cryptogram is a fingerprint of the transaction, holding elements of the originator, recipient, financial institution and the transaction.
  • A token vault is a secured repository, or database, that establishes and maintains the payment token to Sending/Receiving Account number mapping. The token vault is the only area in which the token can be mapped back to the consumer’s original card details. All token vaults comply with Payment Card Industry (PCI) specifications.

Rambus teams with eftpos for Android Pay in Australia

Token Service Provider technology secures mobile payments for Australia’s largest debit card system

SUNNYVALE, CA and MELBOURNE, Australia – Nov. 13, 2017 – Today Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS) announced that eftpos, the Australian domestic debit network, is using the Rambus Token Service Provider (TSP) technology to securely digitize payment cards to support Android Pay. The proven and trusted Rambus TSP platform enables eftpos to maintain consumer data securely through tokenization, which allows the replacement of sensitive data with unique reference numbers so information is not compromised.

Android Pay enables eftpos cardholders from participating banks and credit unions to use their eligible Android smartphones for everyday purchases in-store and within Android apps. Android Pay enables Android users to seamlessly tap and pay with their phones at payments terminals across Australia. Android Pay is the simple and secure way to use your Android phone to pay in stores and within apps. To use Android Pay, you’ll need to download the Android Pay app from the Google Play Store. Then simply add your eftpos card and you are good to go. To use Android Pay in a shop, simply wake your phone, hold it near the contactless terminal, and your payment will be complete.

“We’re excited to bring the simplicity and security of mobile payments to eftpos users with Android Pay,” said Pali Bhat, vice president of product management, Payments, Google. “Using Android Pay is more secure  — and much faster — than rummaging through your wallet for a plastic card. People with an Android device can pay at almost 800,000 contactless payment terminals in Australia.”

“With more than 40 million debit cards distributed across Australia, eftpos is one of the most popular payment methods,” said Bret Sewell, SVP and general manager, Rambus Security division. “This collaboration with eftpos enables millions of consumers the opportunity to enjoy secure mobile payments using Android Pay, leveraging our proven Host Card Emulation (HCE) and EMV tokenization software for truly trusted transactions.”

eftpos members can now use eftpos debit cards in Android Pay for secure transactions, leveraging Rambus tokenization software, with nine financial institutions making the service available to their customers at launch. To tokenize a payment transaction, the primary account number (PAN) is sent to a “token vault,” a centralized and highly secure server stored in a PCI-compliant environment provided by the payment network.

“We are thrilled to be one of the first domestic networks in the world to offer tokenization services and support Android Pay,” said eftpos acting CEO, Paul Jennings. “This will bring the convenience of secure, in store mobile payments to many Australians for the first time. We are excited to be working with Rambus, to provide customers with access to their own money via Android Pay at the shops.”

Rambus Token Service Provider

The Rambus Token Service Provider is a comprehensive software platform that offers different solutions within the tokenized payment infrastructure. Some of the key capabilities include:

  • Tokenization Management – reduces fraud by removing confidential consumer card data from the payment network, replacing it with unique tokens. This includes tokenization of primary account numbers (PAN), token vault, de-tokenization, domain management, clearing and settlement support, and identification and verification support.
  • Host Card Emulation – emulates the functionality of a physical secure element (SE) in the cloud for use with Near Field Communication (NFC) transactions, compliant with specifications of major payment networks featuring a plug-in for mobile wallets.
  • Transaction Management – enables issuers to perform transactions by calculating cryptogram version numbers (CVNs) on behalf of the authorization host. It includes cryptogram validation, assurance level validation, PAN processing, and messaging.
  • Trusted Service Manager – issues contactless payment cards and provisions static card data and dynamic key material to a physical SE on a mobile device.

Rambus Collaborates with Samsung Canada and Interac to Help Deliver Samsung Pay in Canada

Tokenization allows Canadian cardholders to make secure mobile payments

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Nov. 1, 2017 – Today Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS), a leader in digital security, semiconductor and IP products and services, announced that it has teamed with Samsung Canada and Interac Association / Acxsys Corporation, the organizations behind Canada’s leading payment brand, to help enable Interac Debit on Samsung Pay in Canada. The Interac Token Service Provider (TSP), developed in collaboration with Rambus, now helps allow Interac users to make secure mobile debit payments through tokenized transactions using Samsung Pay. With the addition of tokenization, this TSP substitutes sensitive information with unique reference numbers to minimize the risk of fraud.

Samsung Pay, a widely accepted mobile payment solution, is a highly-secure platform that works with three levels of security—fingerprint authentication, card tokenization and Samsung’s mobile security platform Samsung KNOX. Thanks to Samsung’s Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, Samsung Pay works wherever you can tap an Interac card today. Now, with the integration of the Interac TSP, Canadian customers can continue to use Samsung Pay in the most convenient way possible.

“When it comes to mobile payments, we understand the important balance of convenience and security and Samsung Pay provides just that – a simple, secure and convenient seamless mobile payment solution,” said Paul Brannen, COO and executive vice president of Samsung Electronics Canada.

Samsung Pay is supported on Galaxy Note8; Galaxy S8 and S8+; Galaxy S7 and S7 edge; Galaxy S6, S6 edge, and S6 edge+; Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy A5 devices and available exclusively in the Samsung Galaxy Apps Store.

“This collaboration is part of Interac’s ongoing efforts to progress mobile payments in Canada,” said Debbie Gamble, Interac Association and Acxsys Corporation’s vice president of digital product and platforms. “Through our partnership with Rambus and Samsung, we are able to expand our TSP platform to more users, bringing Interac Debit on Samsung Pay to consumers in Canada.”

By integrating tokenization technology, Interac Debit on Samsung Pay is able to protect transaction data and mitigate fraud. This technology replaces primary account numbers (PAN) with alternative PANs called payment tokens, making Interac Debit on Samsung Pay a highly-secure payment option, as these tokens have no value to fraudsters when intercepted.

“With the rapid expansion of mobile payments, the increase of data breaches and fraud rates, tokenization technology has become essential in the mobile payments industry,” said Chakib Bouda, chief technology officer of Payments, Rambus. “We are excited to be one of Samsung’s and Interac’s partners to help deliver mobile payment transactions through our collaboration on the TSP.”

Rambus, eftpos Team Up in Australia to Support Apple Pay

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Oct. 17, 2017 – Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS) today announced it has teamed up with eftpos, the Australian domestic debit network, to help support secure transactions with Apple Pay for users in Australia. Through integration with the Rambus Token Service Provider (TSP) technology, eftpos is able to support Apple Pay, the easy, secure and private way to pay. By utilizing tokenization, this TSP technology replaces sensitive information with unique reference numbers and is more secure than traditional plastic cards.

“With millions of eftpos-only debit cards distributed across Australia by its members, eftpos is the country’s most popular debit payment method,” said Chakib Bouda, CTO of the Rambus Payments Division. “This partnership allows more than a million consumers to enjoy secure mobile payments using Apple Pay, leveraging our proven EMV tokenization software for trusted transactions.”

The Rambus TSP technology replaces traditional primary account numbers (PAN) with unique identifiers called payment tokens. By integrating the Rambus tokenization software, participating eftpos members can use eftpos debit cards with Apple Pay for increased protection.

“Our partnership with Rambus gives us the ability to accelerate our secure mobile payments strategy and support Apple Pay,” said eftpos Acting CEO, Paul Jennings. “We are excited to move from our traditional card based payment method into mobile, offering our members in Australia the opportunity to benefit from the convenience and security of Apple Pay.”

Security and privacy are at the core of Apple Pay. When customers use eftpos debit cards with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on your device. Each transaction is authorized with a one-time unique dynamic security code.

Rambus Teams with Google, Interac on Android Pay in Canada

Provider of tokenization software helps secure mobile payments for Interac debit card users

SUNNYVALE, CA, June 5, 2017 – Today Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS) announced that it is working with Google and Interac Association / Acxsys Corporation, the organizations behind Canada’s leading payment brand, to enable Interac® Debit on Android Pay in Canada. Through the Interac Token Service Provider (TSP), which was developed in collaboration with Rambus, Interac debit cardholders can make secure mobile debit payments, now using Android Pay, through tokenized transactions.

“We’re excited to bring the simplicity and security of mobile payments to Interac Debit customers with Android Pay,” said Pali Bhat, vice president of Payment Products, Google. “Starting today, people will be able to use their Android device to pay at hundreds of thousands of contactless payment terminals in Canada.”

Beyond ease of use, Android Pay is more secure because it doesn’t share credit or debit card number with the merchant when consumers pay in stores, but uses a virtual account number to represent the card. Additionally, if the phone is ever lost or stolen, consumers can simply use Google’s Find My Device feature to instantly lock the device, secure it with a new password, or wipe it clean of their personal information.

“Interac Debit is one of the most popular payment methods in Canada,” said Chakib Bouda, CTO of the Rambus Payments Division. “Our collaboration on the TSP will allow millions of consumers to enjoy secure mobile payments using Android Pay in Canada.”

“We’re excited to bring Interac Debit on Android Pay to Canada,” said Debbie Gamble, VP, Digital Product and Platforms, Interac Association and Acxsys Corporation. “The launch of Android Pay is another example of how we are working to accelerate the growth of digital payment experiences in Canada through secure, tokenized digital debit transactions. Such accomplishments are the result of innovative technologies and strong partnerships, including our collaboration with Rambus.”

Rambus Accelerates Mobile Wallet Adoption with Unified Payment Platform

Allows retailers to digitize credit cards, gift cards, loyalty points and coupons into a secure retail wallet for a seamless shopping experience

SUNNYVALE, CA, February 27, 2017 – Today Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS) announced a comprehensive mobile payments platform to enhance payment security, reduce operational costs and increase revenue for retailers. The Rambus Unified Payment Platform securely converts and manages digital value to enable consumers to pay with credit, points and coupons in a single transaction, and transform how they shop and pay.

“Our Unified Payment Platform is based on a bank-proven foundation from our Bell ID acquisition, utilizing tokenization and card provisioning technology that is in use among the largest banks and payment networks worldwide,” said Dr. Ron Black, president and CEO of Rambus. “Our new platform extends this offering to the retailer, enabling them to incorporate payments and manage digital currencies inside a single app to realize an enhanced frictionless shopping experience.”

Overview of Rambus Unified Payment Platform

The Unified Payment Platform consists of these primary components: 1) the Digital Value Manager, 2) Retail Wallet Engine, 3) a white-label retail app and 4) optional modules to support credit/debit cards, gift cards, loyalty points and coupons.

Unified Payment Platform graphic

  1. The Digital Value Manager – the core of the Unified Payment Platform – allows retailers to connect multiple third-party service providers and convert various forms of digital value into a unified “currency” that can be managed in a value store.
  2. The secure Retail Wallet Engine software enables full integration with mobile payment products, including a white label app, and features digital card enrollment, card provisioning and tokenization. The Retail Wallet Engine can be upgraded to include integration with Virtual Point of Sale (VPOS) capabilities and inventory management to enable one-click pay and auto-pay creating a truly frictionless consumer experience.
  3. The white-label app software allows retailers to get their branded app quickly to market. The app can be fully integrated with a suite of products, providing consumers with all-in-one access to the retailer’s unified digital wallet and value-added services.
  4. Customizable modules that provide retailers and merchant acquirers the ability to securely connect to third-party services, convert different types of digital value to a unified currency, and manage gift card, loyalty and coupon services in-house.

  • A credit/debit card module that enables retailers to add a credit or debit card and using tokenization for secure access to digitize physical cards into a single wallet.
  • A gift card module that allows consumers to add or purchase gift cards, redeem gift cards, reload, provide balance inquiry or transfer gift card values.
  • A loyalty module that tracks new and existing loyalty cards, adds points on purchase, supports payment with points and adds bonus points to incentivize users to buy or select products.
  • A coupon module that adds and redeems coupons, which enables retailers to push coupons to consumers in store or in virtual carts.

Enabling a Frictionless Shopping Experience

The Unified Payment Platform provides retailers with enhanced security, reduced cost and increased revenue. By using tokenization, the risk of card on file fraud is reduced by replacing key account information with temporary data. The Retail Wallet Engine enables in-aisle check-out options to lower overhead costs and reduce the number of POS terminals. The platform also helps increase revenue by allowing retailers to more easily engage in cross- or up-sell opportunities with integrated loyalty points and coupons. In addition, this facilitates direct access to detailed shopping data, allowing retailers, banks and merchant acquirers to offer a personalized shopping experience and more effectively compete in a crowded marketplace.

For consumers, the platform provides an effortless experience by unifying multiple units of value—including credit/debit, gift cards, loyalty points and coupons—into a single mobile app, along with digitized receipts and transaction history of purchases.
