Semtech’s Snowbush® IP Family Now Includes a New Ultra-low Power, Ultra-low Latency PCI Express® 3.0 PHY IP Platform for the Expanding Storage and Server Markets

Newly optimized PHY supports 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V supplies on TSMC 28HPM

CAMARILLO, California., June 4, 2014 – Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced the addition of a new PCI Express® (PCIe®) 3.0 PHY IP Platform offering, part of the Snowbush® IP family, optimized for low power and low latency. Building on fourteen PCIe 3.0 specification successful customer product tape-outs at 40nm, and six PCIe 3.0 specification customers on TSMC 28nm process, this new offering provides customers with lowest power and lowest latency while meeting the reach requirements of compliance PCI Express channels. The PHY provides a differentiated choice of supplies (1.8V, 2.5V or 3.3V) to support legacy applications and ease of integration. The ultra-low power consumption for both normal and low power state modes combined with very low wake up latencies enable customers to reduce system power significantly. These features give customers the best IP choice when developing PCIe interfaces for the storage, server, and high performance computing markets.

Maintaining the lowest possible power in all operating modes, while maintaining the necessary reach, is of overriding concern when using PCI Express architecture in a server application.  Legacy channels can be very lossy and often require additional power consumption. Maintaining the power efficiency across different long and short reach channels is particularly challenging. The new PHY platform from Semtech can support both long reach and short reach channels, delivering compliant performance with the best in class power efficiency of under 7.5pJ/bit in 28nm. As the technology moves to 16 FinFET the power is expected to reduce by as much as 30%.

Storage applications require low-power across all operating modes and low-latency. Providing fast wake up time in the order of 10’s of nano-seconds is critical in storage applications. New enhancements to the L1 sub-state are added to reduce power when the PCI link is idle.

“Semtech’s continued investment into new product offerings helps enable the PCI Express ecosystem,” said Al Yanes, PCI-SIG® President and Chairman. “As a member of PCI-SIG, Semtech, produces PCIe 3.0 products that help ensure the continued success of the PCIe 3.0 architecture in the market.”

“Northwest Logic and our customers have had very positive experiences with the Snowbush IP. This latest Snowbush PCIe PHY further extends Semtech’s strong PHY offering, said Brian Daellenbach, President of Northwest Logic. “We fully support this PHY with our family of PCI Express Controllers and DMA Cores.”

“This new offering gives our customers IP that is differentiated by its performance, power, and stringent latency requirements,” said Kevin Walsh, Worldwide Marketing Director, Snowbush IP. “We expect that the 28nm process node will continue to be very active for server, storage, as well as in high end consumer, for some time to come. By providing robust, silicon proven PHY IP, with significant differentiation for these segments, customers gain both in confidence and in quantifiable performance.”

Achronix Announces PCI-SIG® Compliance for Hardened PCI Express on Speedster22i FPGAs

Santa Clara, Calif., May 6, 2014 – Achronix Semiconductor Corporation today announced that its 22nm Speedster22i devices have achieved PCI-SIG® compliance with the PCI Express® (PCIe®) 3.0 Specification for x8 lanes. The Speedster22i devices successfully passed the PCI-SIG Compliance and Interoperability Tests at the PCI-SIG workshop and are now included in the PCI-SIG integrators list. Based on Intel’s 22nm Tri-gate technology, Speedster22i devices are the only FPGAs shipping today that contain a wide range of embedded hard IP – including PCI Express Gen3 with integrated DMA Engine, DDR3, 100G Ethernet and Interlaken.

Hardening key interface IP in the Speedster22i devices frees up a substantial portion of the programmable logic fabric, increasing the effective capacity of the FPGA and reducing the overall power consumption. Additionally the embedded hard IP in Speedster22i HD FPGAs eliminates the cost of purchasing, integrating, closing timing and testing the functions that are required when soft IP is used. The PCI Express logic cores used in Speedster22i devices support Gen 1, 2 and 3 in x1, x4 and x8 configurations and are supplied by Northwest Logic. Speedster22i HD devices are the only FPGAs with an integrated DMA engine hardened as part of the PCI Express core. This provides additional cost, performance and power advantages vs. a soft implementation.

“We embedded the Northwest Logic PCI Express IP because it is an industry-leading, silicon-proven solution,” said Steve Mensor, Vice President of Marketing at Achronix. “Our customers require fully proven functional solutions and that’s what we are delivering with the embedded IP in our 22nm Speedster22i devices.”

“Our PCI Express IP has been successfully deployed in hundreds of applications in both hard and soft implementations,” said Brian Daellenbach, President, Northwest Logic. “We are excited to see our IP play a role in the Speedster22i success story.”

The Speedster22i HD1000 and HD680 devices are shipping today and have the following embedded hard IP: PCIe Gen3 x8 controllers, DDR 2/3 controllers, 10/40/100G Ethernet controllers and 12x10G Interlaken controllers. A video demonstration of the Speedster22i hardened PCI Express IP is available at http://www.achronix.com/products/videos/pci-express-demo.html.
